Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly missed his team's victory over the New England Patriots on Saturday night. As it turns out, the reason behind his absence could not have been more tragic.

On Monday, Kelly revealed that his daughter with his wife Emma had passed away. Kelly took to Instagram to make the heartbreaking announcement:

According to Ryan Young of Yahoo Sports, the Colts star's wife was 19 weeks along with her pregnancy when disaster struck. On Wednesday, the couple learned that their unborn daughter's heart had stopped beating and that they had to go through an emergency delivery. Unfortunately, their baby, Mary Kate, did not make it.

Emma also shared a post on Instagram wherein she expressed her utmost grief from this unexpected turn of events:

“I was so angry at first that I had to deliver her, only for it to become the biggest blessing out of this nightmare,” Parts of Emma's post read. “It gave Ryan and I the opportunity to hold our little saint, Mary Kate, before officially saying goodbye to her. These 19 weeks with her opened our hearts and souls more than we ever imagined possible and I’m forever grateful we had some time, Earth-side, with the little girl who made us mom and dad.”

There is perhaps nothing more sorrowful in this world than for a parent to bury their own child. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ryan Kelly and his wife Emma during these trying times.
