Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis exited the team's 116-114 loss to the Utah Jazz on Thursday with an apparent hand injury. On Friday, Shams Charania of ESPN reported that AD suffered ligament damage in his left hand, an especially concerning update for Davis who has been mentioned in a plethora of trade rumors.
“Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis has sustained ligament damage in his left hand, sources tell me and @BannedMacMahon. Depending on second opinion and if surgery is required, Davis could miss a number of months,” Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
There is a realistic chance that Davis could miss multiple months if surgery is required. Seemingly, the expectation was that AD was likely to be moved ahead of the upcoming trade deadline in February. Now, potential suitors will surely be hesitant to acquire the 32-year-old veteran.
At the moment, Davis' official timeline for a return is unclear. NBA insider Marc Stein also provided an update on the situation.
“The Mavericks will seek a hand specialist’s opinion on the extent of the damage to Anthony Davis’ left hand, but league sources confirm tonight that their fears of ligament damage from the injury sustained in Utah appear to have been validated. Davis is out for an unknown period,” Stein wrote on X.
If surgery ends up being required, a trade will not be necessarily out of the question. Surgery and missing months of action would obviously minimize Davis' trade value, though.
We will continue to monitor and provide updates on Anthony Davis' injury status as they are made available.
