In just his first game in Detroit Lions uniform, veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin was able to make a major impact on defense. His hit on former teammate and current New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's game ended the night of the signal-caller.

Apparently, Irvin has very good intel on Carr, having spent time on the same team with the QB back during their days with the Oakland Raiders. He put his knowledge of Carr to use with a vicious hit that earned him a penalty.

I played with him in Oakland, so I know when you get around him, he gets rattled,” Irvin said of Carr (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk). “He’s a hell of a player, but we knew if we got around him, we could rattle him a little bit.”

The 36-year-old Irvin also sort of lamented the current NFL landscape in terms of playing defense, particularly when it comes to getting to the quarterback.

“I thought he had the ball,” Irvin added. “The game is different now. They said I had to roll off to the side. I don’t know how I’m gonna do that, but just something I guess I’ve got to focus on more.”

In any case, the Lions ended up winning the Saints game, 33-28, to get right back up following a 29-22 home loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12.

Irvin, who had stints as well with the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Chicago Bears, was signed by the Lions to a one-year deal worth $370,800.
