Helldivers 2 recently announced that a PlayStation Network will be required to play the game. If you reside in one of the many countries where PSN accounts are not available, you risk getting your account banned once you link your Steam and PSN accounts together. Here’s a guide on how to refund Helldivers 2 on Steam.

Helldivers 2 Steam Refund guide

Some users, despite having over 2 hours on the game, successfully refunded Helldivers 2. Under normal circumstances, 2 hours would be the maximum game time that Steam would consider for refunds.

You may have to submit your refund requests more than once.

Make sure you are logged in on the Steam account on your browser with the Helldivers 2 purchase you would like to refund.

  1. Head to https://help.steampowered.com/en/
  2. Click “Helldivers 2”
    1. If it’s not among your recent products, click on Purchases then look for “Helldivers 2” there.
  3. Click “I would like a refund”
  4. Click “I’d like to request a refund”

Confirm your payment methods for the refund request. It will also ask for a reason – the Helldivers 2 community has come up with a good message you can use as a reference as to what to put on this field:

“The developers have announced that they will restrict my access to the game unless I sign up for and use a third-party service and account. This requirement was obfuscated at release and waived for three months, before it was announced as a requirement to continue to play the game at all.”

As for the reason, choose “The multiplayer doesn’t work.”

Another player with almost 100 hours on the game gave a concise reason to Steam, which was accepted: “Sony has retroactively changed how the game works and forced legal agreements upon me I do not accept.”

The Helldivers 2 Sony controversy

Helldivers 2 went from one of the most beloved newly released titles to one of the most antagonized, thanks to their announcement that a PlayStation Network account will be henceforth required to play the game.

The game now sits at a Mixed reception on Steam, with recent reviews at Overwhelmingly Negative with almost 300 thousand reviews after the announcement.

The game has also been delisted and is currently unavailable for purchase in the 177 countries that are not serviced by PSN.

The public outrage directed at the developers at Arrowhead Studios, is misdirected, says the devs. According to them, this was a decision made solely by Sony as the publisher of the title. Whether this is the case or not, it did not stop people from voicing their negative reactions on every platform possible. This includes the Steam page for Helldivers (the first game), which is not affected by the PSN requirement.

“It deeply saddens me that @HelldiversGame is also being review bombed due to the recent @Helldivers2 controversy,” Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt wrote on X. “HD1 does not have PSN login. So, it doesn’t make sense for people to target unrelated titles. This is about Helldivers 2 and the PSN linking policy.”

He also said that they were in talks with PlayStation and is doing “everything he can to speak for the community” but he does not have the final say.

All of this comes to a head as PlayStation has retracted the requirement and clarified that the PSN account linking for Helldivers 2 players, new and current alike, will no longer be pushing forward.
