Is Will Gluck's Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led rom-com Anyone But You streaming on Netflix?

Anyone But You's Netflix streaming release date

Anyone But You hit Netflix on April 23. The rom-com hit the streaming service almost five months to the day that it hit theaters. Sony distributed the film.

It was a smash box office hit. During its theatrical run, the film grossed well over $200 million worldwide. The film had a reported budget of $25 million as well, making it a profitable film for Sony.

This came after a rocky start. Anyone But You opened to $6 million ($8 million if you include the long Christmas holiday weekend). That was the same weekend that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($27 million), Migration ($12.4 million), and The Iron Claw ($4.8 million) opened. Wonka was also in its second weekend, so there was a lot of competition.

However, the film ultimately legged out to $88.3 million domestically. This was helped by a 45.9% bump the next weekend in theaters and the film continued to have steady weekends throughout its run. Overseas, the film grossed $130.6 million.

That's probably why Sony waited so long to put Anyone But You on streaming. It was available on PVOD, but the film made its way to Blu-ray and DVD on March 12, 2024. Even then, it didn't hit Netflix for over a month later.

What's it about?

Anyone But You follows two people, played by Sweeney and Powell, who hit it off on their first date. However, things go sour very quickly and the two go cold.

They then find each other at a destination wedding. While they don't like each other, they are forced to act like a happy couple to save face.

The film is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Will Gluck co-wrote the script with Ilana Wolpert, who also developed the story. Gluck's other credits include other rom-coms such as Easy A and Friends with Benefits.

His other credits include children's films such as Annie and Peter Rabbit (and its sequel, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway). Like Anyone But You, Gluck's return to the rom-com genre, the Peter Rabbit films — especially the first — were box office hits. The film grossed over $350 million. Its sequel grossed $153 million during its theatrical run in 2021.
