While 2024 is a relatively quiet year at theaters for the comic book genre, there are still a handful of films to try and get audiences into cinemas before the year is out. Among those set to release is Venom: The Last Dance which, according to one of the heads over at Sony Motion Pictures Group, looks poised to give the character a big sendoff.

Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman was on hand at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to discuss the studios' releases planned for the rest of 2024 and into 2025, according to Deadline. While speaking on some of the bigger projects Sony has in the works such as the planned Legend of Zelda film and upcoming Karate Kid, Rothman also briefly addressed the next Venom film and confirmed it will be the final entry in Tom Hardy-led series.

“The third and last Venom, is going to be huge,” Rothman told Deadline.

While it is the first official confirmation the next Venom will be the last, fans have speculated about that possibility online since development began after the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Hardy's social media activity during the film's shoot only further fueled fan speculation as the actor would regularly post celebratory messages for the cast and crew of Venom: The Last Dance.

“Surrounded by talented and passionate departments and when surrounded by people you love and care it doesn't get any better,” Hardy said in an Instagram post from November 2023.

Time to Dance

Development for Venom: The Last Dance began in December 2021, following on from the financial success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage in October. Screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who helped write the first two films' screenplays, returned to write the third entry's script alongside Hardy, who co-wrote the second film's script with Marcel.

Marcel was later announced as Venom: The Last Dance's director in what will be her feature directorial debut.

In May 2023, Juno Temple and MCU-veteran Chiwetel Ejiofor had signed on for the film, though their roles have been largely kept under wraps. Temple's role was later confirmed to be a lead role. Clark Backo was later announced to have joined the cast in February 2024, but like Ejiofor and Temple, her role has not been officially announced.

It is not known if Michelle Williams, who portrayed Anne Weying in the previous Venom films, would be returning, but she had previously expressed a desire to return for the third entry.

Filming for Venom: The Last Dance began in June 2023 in Spain, but production had to shut down the following month due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that would last until the latter was resolved in November. Production quickly started back up and filming was reportedly completed by early 2024.

Venom: The Last Dance is scheduled to release in theaters on October 25, 2024.
