The New York Mets take on the Tampa Bay Rays. Our MLB odds series has our Mets Rays prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Mets Rays.

The New York Mets have been a volatile team so far this season. Which version is the real one? The Mets lost their first five games of the season and looked absolutely awful. Then they won 12 of their next 15 games and looked like a juggernaut, winning road series over the heavyweight Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers. Then the Mets turned around and lost 8 of 12 games to fall back to the .500 mark. They are 16-16 through 32 games and have had three distinctly different segments of games in the first five weeks of the season. Given that the Mets are bouncing around from elite play to bad play and back, we don't really know where this team is going to land. It seems clear that the Braves and Dodgers will win 95 or more games. It seems clear that the Marlins, Rockies and White Sox will lose at least 100 games. Some teams are easy to peg in early May, but the Mets are not one of them. It will be fascinating to see how this team moves along under first-year manager Carlos Mendoza.

The Tampa Bay Rays are a shocking 15-18 through 33 games. This team has been a model of stability, consistency, and overachieving in the past several seasons of Major League Baseball. This year, it just isn't coming together. The loss of Tyler Glasnow to the Dodgers hasn't helped, and the absence of Wander Franco due to his off-field troubles has definitely hurt. Yet, we still have a lot of the 2023 Rays on this 2024 roster, and those veterans are not performing at the same level. This team has been shockingly bad at hitting with runners in scoring position in 2024. The Rays' failures at the plate caused them to get swept by the lowly Chicago White Sox. Chicago is 6-26, and yet the Sox are 3-0 against the Rays, which is both humiliating and really damaging for a Tampa Bay team which has to contend with the cutthroat American League East. The Rays really need to get going. They can't remain under .500 into June and at the All-Star break. They will get buried in the American League wild card race. They need to get above .500 by Memorial Day if not sooner if they want to have a realistic chance of making the postseason once again.

Why The Mets Could Cover The Spread

The Mets are an inconsistent team, so after a Friday loss to the Rays in which they gave up 10 runs, expecting them to bounce back is not unreasonable. With some teams, momentum is a reason to bet on that team. With the Mets, it might be just the opposite. Pick against the flow of momentum.

Why The Rays Could Cover The Spread

The Rays finally scored in bunches on Friday. It was as though a lot of pent-up frustration was unleashed in the 10-run outpouring versus the Mets. Maybe now guys will continue to swing the bats well and lift the Rays to a much higher standard of play, one we are used to seeing in The Trop.
