Academy Award-winner and recent Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Michelle Yeoh is set to star in Prime Video's limited series Blade Runner 2099, which is a follow up to the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049, Deadline reported.

Yeoh's role is still under wraps and so are other details of the show. This is the latest piece in the expansion of the franchise based on Philip K. Dick's groundbreaking 1968 sci-fi novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The first movie was released in 1982, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

Will Michelle Yeoh be a blade runner or a replicant?

Blade Runner 2099's production began overseas, after it was delayed almost a year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. It was originally set to film in Belfast, but production ended up relocating to Prague after the work stoppage.

Silka Louisa is attached as the series' showrunner. She will also serve as executive producer along with Scott, Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions. Shōgun director Jonathan van Tulleken is helming the series' first two episodes and will also executive produce. Steven Johnson sill serve as co-executive producer.

Yeoh was most recently seen in Netflix's The Brothers Sun. After her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022, she starred in the streaming platform's movie The School for Good and Evil as Professor Anemone. In the same year, she also played Scian in The Witcher: Blood Origin.

She's set to play Madame Morrible in the upcoming Jon M. Chu's live-action adaptation of Wicked. The actress will reprise her character Philippa Georgiou in the movie Star Trek: Section 31 directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. She'll next be seen in the James Cameron's Avatar sequels as Dr. Karina Mogue.

Denis Villeneuve's 2049, which starred Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford reprising his role from the original as Rick Deckard, is set 30 years after the 1982 film. 2099 is set even longer than that. The story expansion to a series format has been planned since 2022.

In late 2021, Scott told the BBC, “We [have already] written the pilot for Blade Runner and the bible. So, we're already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, the first 20 hours.”

The bible, in this case, refers to the general outline of a show's first stretch of episodes.

Over the years, there have been several Blade Runner projects. In the same year the first sequel was released, several prequels were released as short films: Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run.

The franchise's first series was the CGI animated Blade Runner: Black Lotus released in 2021 on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll. The series had 13 episodes.

While there are no other casting announcements yet, the upcoming Prime Video series, set 50 years after the last movie and is follows its events, it's conceivable that Deckard could make an appearance again with his daughter Dr. Ana Stelline. As to who Yeoh could be playing, a replicant or a blade runner, that's still a mystery.
