The Los Angeles Angels received some tough injury news regarding their best player, Mike Trout, recently. Trout has a torn meniscus and he opted for surgery to fix the tear. Trout had surgery recently after an MRI revealed the tear and he began to feel increased soreness in his knee. He now has to miss some time to recover, but he will be able to return to the Angels at 100%.

There was the option for Mike Trout to delay the surgery and continue to play, but he wouldn't have been at 100% and he would've been in a designated hitter role. He didn't want that. Trout wants to be able to give it his all.

“It was an option they put out there,” Trout said in regards to postponing his surgery, according to an article from ESPN. “It would have been just maintaining the pain level of it. The day I got the MRI and it showed [a tear], I was in a lot of pain, so it would have been a tough road for the rest of the year to bear that. I felt the best option for me was to get it right and be fully healthy to come back soon.”

Trout isn't 100% sure when the tear occurred. He felt soreness in his knee getting worse, and that's when he decided to have it looked at it. It doesn't sound like it happened all at once.

“It wasn't one particular play that did it,” Trout said. “I felt a little ache and woke up the next day and couldn't walk.”

This is the fourth season in a row that Trout has been out with a serious injury. He is one of the best players in the game of baseball, but these injuries have not been kind to him. He was feeling good to start the year, so this is especially disappointing.

“It's tough because I felt real good [to begin the season], but things just happen,” Trout added. “I'm doing everything I can to get back on the field. I want to go as fast as I can, but I don't want to push it.”

Mike Trout is still around the team a lot

It's easy for a player to lose focus or motivation during a time like this when they aren't able to play. Mike Trout is in recovery mode and that is the only thing he needs to focus on. However, he is still showing up for meetings and he is around the Angels team often.

“No one is asking Mike to be in those meetings,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “Mike is at the ballpark because Mike wants to be around his teammates. Any tidbits that he can give to them while he's here, we welcome.”

Trout is a team guy and he doesn't like being away from the game. He has some work to do to get back from this injury, but he seems satisfied with his decision to get the surgery right away. Hopefully for Trout and the Angels' sake, he can stay healthy for the rest of the season and in the future as well. Injuries have certainly been a roadblock for him in recent years.
